Painting, Day 1.

Jan Madhyam is a small organization based on the outskirts of Delhi, in Haryana state.  They work primarily with physically and cognitively disabled children from low-income families and teach life skills, provide occupational/speech therapy sessions, and offer access to basic education/opportunities for self-expression through the arts. I learned about them through a contact that I met at the Sanskriti Foundation Kendra, where I did an artist residency, and I was able to facilitate this small mural with a group of their students.

To the left is the original design, based on youth drawings depicting life in their home state/village. It was remarkable how differently they drew common images such as people, clothing, buildings, and patterns used for general ornamentation.

Center detail

This little guy was such an enthusiastic painter - he stayed at the center all day, and insisted on helping me non-stop.  When I left, he couldn't say thank you enough!
