Dual Identities
Summer, 2013
This series of photographs and primary accounts explores the inherent duality of migration for first generation Americans. In doing so, it provides a space in which thoughts that are often unspoken can be articulated. The different planes separating image and text act as a metaphor for the physical and emotional disconnections intrinsic to immigration.
Fabricated Landscapes
Spring, Summer, 2013
By definition, photographs represent a version of an object or space found in reality - this is a series of images created to challenge expectations of a photograph. Viewers create their own interpretations for each image, based within their own repository of memories.
Spaces/Places
India, Spring, 2013
A collection of physical realms that I encountered - ranging from vast expanses that capture my imagination to the the crevices and corners whose light and textures intrigue me.
Portraits of India
India, Spring, 2013
A relatively new endeavor - I was intimidated by people for most of my life, and I am now trying to find ways to embrace and capture those around me. This is a selection of portraits from a two month trip to northern India in 2013.
Chasing the Sun
Winter, 2012
Like many people, it is difficult for me to be deprived of the sun; winters are always dreaded, and some small amount of seasonal depression inevitably sneaks up on me. I developed this series as a coping mechanism. All photos are taken around my house (another issue with winter - the desire not to leave home!) I tried to value the muted, understated light that characterizes winter, but also actively sought out the sunlight when it was available. In doing so, I gained a greater appreciation for the season, and it was slightly more bearable.
Meditations on Growth Series & Installation
Masters Visual Thesis
Cyanotype on fabric, bamboo
Summer 2009
The installation served as a space for me to consider my work with refugee youth and reflect on the relationships that I've formed with my students. The organic shapes and ambiguous forms in each panel create visual metaphors that explore the unique set of circumstances that have brought my refugee students to this country, and the role that I can play in their lives here.
Plus/Minus Solo Show
Post-Baccalaureate Solo Show, Dickinson College, Digital Photography, Spring 2008
This series was created in tandem with 18 paintings that were displayed in the same show. Plus/Minus refers to the interplay between positive and negative spaces within a composition, and my experiments in reversing the roles that each type of "space" fulfills within a photograph or painting. In considering this dialogue, I reflected upon the constant ebb and flow of daily life. The compromises we make, whether they are informed by our interpersonal relationships or our interactions with our environment, often push or pull us in directions that we don't often anticipate.
